This study will explore Richard Wagner’s Ring cycle and Parsifal from the perspective of spiritual science. We offer this study in the hope that it will make a helpful contribution to the 2010 “Ring Festival” activities in Southern California. Please participate in as many of the study sessions as you can, and invite your friends to come too.
Rudolf Steiner pointed out that “Richard Wagner has no wish to be merely musician, merely dramatist, merely poet. All that we have seen flow down from the spiritual worlds becomes for him a means of uniting in the physical world with something still higher.” (The Influence of Spiritual Beings upon Man) These five operas both portray and nurture humankind’s evolution toward freedom and love. To convey this stirring cosmic drama, Richard Wagner created a new musical language of tremendous eloquence and power.
Each of the five sessions of our study will center on one of these five great operas.
The first session, on Feb. 13, will explore Das Rheingold, the opera which opens the cycle.
The Feb. 13 session also will provide an introduction to Wagner’s life and work and an overview of all five operas.
